Junior Girls Programs
One of the ways that the AWGA uses your donated funds is to support various junior girls programs in our state. Some programs are exclusively for girls, others are for girls and boys. Each year, the AWGA Fundraising Committee reviews the needs of each of our supported programs and allocates funds accordingly. Following are our supported programs. You may make your tax deductible donation directly to the AWGA to be included in that allocation, or you may specify a program that you wish to support with your donation.
State Team Tournaments
Through AWGA membership fees and generous donations by member clubs and individuals, the AWGA fully funds the following state teams.
The Girls Junior Americas Cup is one of the finest junior golf team tournaments offered to girls 17 years and younger. 18 teams from western United States including Hawaii and the countries of Canada and Mexico are invited to participate. The tournament is hosted by each state on a rotating basis. Arizona last hosted the Matches in 2006, when they were conducted at the beautiful Oro Valley Country Club. Hosting this event was an exciting and wonderful experience for our Committee and our state. Each year, 4 junior girl golfers are chosen to represent our state by their successin Junior Golf Association of Arizona tournaments and championships. This is a once in a lifetime experience and a great reward for the girls who have worked so hard to qualify for the Arizona Team. Being a part of the four-girl Arizona team is a distinctive honor.
The Mary Cave Cup is an Inaugural tournament providing the opportunity for two additional girls to travel to the San Diego area to represent the State of Arizona in girls’ junior golf tournament. This event is comparable to the Boys’ Hogan Cup Matches.
Junior Golf Association of Arizona–Open to Girls and Boys
The Junior Golf Association of Arizona is a 501c(3) corporation, a charity, and relies on fund-raising activities and donations received from clubs, corporations, and individuals. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
The JGAA governs and promotes junior golf in the state of Arizona. It introduces non-golfing juniors to the game, establishes golf programs as schools, assists golf courses with their junior programs, conducts major junior golf tournaments in the state and administers the Tres Arnold Scholarship Fund.
State Tournaments – These highly competitive events are open to all qualified members of the JGAA. Many serve as qualifiers to national events as well as to JGAA invitational tournaments. Members of Arizona’s four state teams, the Junior Girls and Junior Boys Americas Cup teams, the Mary Cave Cup team, and the Hogan Cup team, are also selected based on stipulated criteria in designated state tournaments. These two-day and three-day events are held at courses through out Arizona.
Developmental Programs – These non-competitive programs are designed to introduce non-golfing juniors to the game, establish friendships with other golfers, gain an understanding of the Rules of Golf, and develop skills to prepare them for on-course play and tournament competition. These programs provide beginning and intermediate golf instruction during the school year.
The LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, Phoenix/Tucson/Prescott is a developmental junior golf program designed for girls ages 6-18. It was formed specifically to create a network for girls to learn to play golf in a non-threatening environment.
The LPGA GGC event schedule is based on the location of the club. The girls club offers a variety of golf formats to encourage fun and friendships while eliminating the stress associated with athletic competitions. The GGC provides opportunities allowing girls to play with parents or guardians to encourage healthy relationships between juniors and adults in a social setting. GGC members learn more than just the game of golf. They build friendships and a sense of pride while learning honor, etiquette and a lifetime sport.
Southern Arizona Junior Golf Association – Open to Girls & Boys is a 501(c) (3) corporation, a charity, and relies on fundraising activities and donations given to the Association by corporations, golf clubs and individuals. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
The Green Valley Junior Golf Club is addressing a definite need for the young girls and boys of the Green Valley area and the surrounding communities by providing a wholesome program that builds self-esteem and confidence. The game of golf teaches and requires discipline, honesty, etiquette and mental toughness. These principles apply to everyday life and provide lifetime guidelines for our members.
The Tucson Roadrunners Girls Golf Club – Similar to the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf Club in Phoenix, the Tucson Roadrunners offers a developmental junior golf program for girls in the Tucson area. The Tucson Roadrunners Girls Golf Club is addressing a definite need for the young girls of our community by providing a wholesome program that builds self-esteem and confidence. The game of golf teaches and requires discipline, honesty, etiquette and mental toughness. These principles easily apply to everyday life and can provide lifetime guidelines for our members.
Quarterly SAJGA Clinics - Before playing in tournaments, each player must attend one of the quarterly SAJGA clinics. These clinics are not the same as the city-sponsored clinics but once members attend, they do qualify for the City of Tucson, Parks and Recreation golf card which allows them to play city golf courses at discounted greens fees
Southwest Section PGA Junior Programs– Open to Girls & Boys
The Southwest Section PGA Youth Golf Club is an entry level; developmental program designed for juniors ages 6 to 18 who are not ready to compete at the tournament level. Our goal is to provide opportunities for the juniors to become educated in the game of golf. As the juniors progress through the program they will learn about the Rules of Golf, etiquette, and playing strategies. Upon progression past the highest level the player will have access to the Southwest Section PGA Junior Tour and JGAA tournament events.
Junior Tour - Open to Girls and Boys
The SWSPGA Junior Tour is a series of six one-day tournaments, held weekly throughout the months of June and July. Thirteen districts, geographically divided, plus an additional district in Southern Nevada, administered with help from the Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association, accommodate many of the top juniors in the Southwest Section PGA. The Section works hand in hand with the Junior Golf Association of Arizona to promote junior golf in this area.
The Southwest Section also conducts the Westfield PGA Junior Championship and the SWSPGA State Junior Championship, which is the culmination of the Junior Tour.
The Tucson Ricki Rarick Junior Golf – Open to Girls & Boys program offers introduction and experience in playing stroke play competition. One and two day tournaments are offered for a six-week period during the summer and a series of six tournaments during the winter. These tournaments afford the opportunity for juniors to incorporate rules, etiquette and management with course play.
